Condition Report

Case:
The 18K gold Thunderbird bezel is in superb condition and appears unpolished with very finely delineated markings. The case is in excellent condition and has likely only ever been very lightly polished. There are minor scuffs and some minor scratches and pitting, particularly on the case back. There are also some minor scratches on the underside of the lugs near the pins. There are a few minor scuffs and marks on the Rolex crystal.

Dial:
The Original Rolex Silver Sunburst dial is in excellent condition, with all lume plots intact. There are two very minor marks near the 9 o'clock baton marker, toward the center of the dial.

Movement:
The fully-serviced automatic-winding calibre by Rolex is in excellent condition.

Strap:
New aftermarket made-in-Italy black leather strap.

The Rolex Turn-O-Graph, introduced in 1953, was the brand’s first serially produced wristwatch with a rotating bezel. It predated the Submariner and GMT-Master. It was originally conceived as a tool watch for timing events, or even just phonebooth calls, but by the late 1950s the U.S. Air Force’s Thunderbird aerobatic squadron adopted it as their official watch. This association gave rise to the “Thunderbird” nickname, and while it never became as iconic as the Submariner or GMT, the Turn-O-Graph is itself iconic and historically important as Rolex’s first rotating-bezel model. It's a "missing link," one of the first sports-lifestyle watch crossovers. The bridge between dress and tool watches.

This example is in very good condition with some light surface scratches throughout the case. It appears to have been lightly polished, but the bezel is in excellent, possibly-unpolished condition with minor scratches. The dial is clean with only a couple of minor blemishes on the 9 o'clock side, and the lume plots are present and full. The 36mm Datejust case punches above its weight with its pronounced Thundbird bezel. This reference is becoming increasingly rare and difficult to find similarly-excellent examples of.
