Case:
This worn, honest vintage condition consistent with age. It has been expertly cleaned by one of our technicians, and was not polished. There are some light hairline scratches and pitting, particularly on the back of the case, and normal-to-light wear distributed evenly throughout the case.

Dial:
The original silver dial is crisp with a minor spot on the dial below the second 'F' in 'Tiffany'.

Movement:
The quartz calibre by Tiffany is in excellent condition.

Bracelet:
This watch comes on a black 17mm leather strap.

The Atlas line begins, as a surprising number of Tiffany stories do, with architecture rather than horology. In 1853, a statue of the Titan Atlas holding a clock was installed above the entrance of the firm’s Broadway headquarters, later traveling with the house to Union Square and eventually Fifth Avenue, where it remains today. The watch collection that would take its name from this figure arrived much later, introduced in 1983 under the direction of longtime Tiffany design chief John Loring as a deliberate translation of the statue’s Roman numeral clockface into a wristwatch.

By the mid-1990s, when this sterling silver quartz large model was produced, the Atlas had quietly become Tiffany’s most legible exercise in design continuity. The broader Atlas jewelry collection was formally launched in 1995, expanding the Roman numeral motif across objects while maintaining the essential visual grammar established by the original watch. What makes these earlier quartz examples interesting in hindsight is their refusal to complicate the idea. The reference sits at a moment when Tiffany was not yet interested in turning the Atlas into a fashion object, but was still treating it as a modernist wristwatch that happened to come from a jeweler.

The case is executed in solid sterling silver with a smooth, almost architectural profile that gives the watch a weight and tactility absent from later steel iterations. The defining Atlas relief numerals are cut directly into the bezel, framing a restrained silver dial that keeps its own Roman track printed within. Slender baton hands maintain the clarity of the layout without competing with the chapter ring, while the signed dial remains typically understated in the way Tiffany tends to get right. On most surviving examples, light surface wear to the soft silver is expected and, in context, often preferable to aggressive refinishing.

Overall it's a compact and fascinating piece of industrial design from a period when Tiffany was exploring how its historic codes could live comfortably in the late twentieth century.
