By the early 1950s, Longines had already spent decades building some of the most dependable and thoughtfully constructed wristwatches of the period. The manufacture’s output from these years often occupied an appealing middle ground between the utilitarian watches of the wartime era and the more refined civilian pieces that would follow. This Longines ref. 5413-11, dating to 1951, captures that transition particularly well.

The watch belongs to the family collectors commonly refer to as “Sei Tacche,” Italian for “six notches,” a reference to the six indentations cut into the screw-down caseback. These notches allowed the back to be securely tightened and were part of a broader move toward more robust, better-sealed wristwatch cases during the 1930s and 1940s. Longines employed this construction across a number of watches intended for demanding everyday use, and today the Sei Tacche cases have become a recognizable collecting category in their own right.

This example is housed in a 33mm stainless-steel case with elongated lugs, giving the watch a more substantial presence on the wrist than its measurements might initially suggest. The case remains in excellent vintage condition, retaining the straightforward proportions and purposeful character that make these early steel Longines watches so appealing.

The original silver dial is the focal point. Applied arrow-shaped hour markers alternate with Arabic numerals at 3, 6, 9 and 12, creating a layout that is highly legible without feeling overly utilitarian. Luminous alpha hands complete the design, while decades of natural oxidation have given the dial an attractive, softly mottled patina. Rather than appearing pristine or overly restored, the surface shows the kind of honest aging that gives a vintage watch individuality and a clear sense of its history.

Inside is Longines’ manually wound calibre 12L, a 17-jewel movement representative of the manufacture’s reputation for precise and durable movements during this period. The movement has been fully serviced and is in excellent condition.

Presented on a black leather strap handmade in Rome, this ref. 5413-11 is an appealing example of postwar Longines design: restrained, highly functional, and rich in the small construction details that reward closer inspection. More than seventy years later, its proportions remain remarkably wearable, while the aged silver dial and distinctive Sei Tacche case give it a character that could only have been produced through time.
