In the years following the Second World War, Movado was still a true manufacture, producing its own calibres and competing, at least in spirit, with the likes of Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin, while offering a slightly more accessible entry point into that world. By the mid-to-late 1950s, some of Movado’s time-only dress watches drew on the restrained vocabulary established by the Calatrava archetype. These watches were not copies so much as interpretations, shaped by Movado’s own engineering and design sensibilities, and frequently powered by early automatic movements such as the brand’s in-house full-rotor calibres introduced in the second half of the decade.

The present example belongs to that moment. The so-called “Calatrava-style” designation here is about design language: a slim, round case, a narrow bezel, and a dial that favors proportion over ornament. What distinguishes this watch is the use of horn lugs, which break from the otherwise conservative profile. They extend outward with a gentle curve, adding a sense of sculpture to what would otherwise be a purely classical form. Cases of this type were not atypical of Movado’s better dress offerings of the period, balancing wearability with wrist presence.

The dial, a silvered surface, softly patinated, carries applied thick faceted markers and a restrained minute track of gold dots, all laid out with a clarity that feels deliberate. The emphasis is on proportion and legibility. It is paired with faceted dauphine hands that catch the light without overwhelming the composition. The patina is even, honest, and warmly attractive.

Condition appears consistent with a well-preserved vintage piece. The case retains its geometry, with the horn lugs still clearly defined, and the dial shows the expected passage of time without distraction. It is a thoughtful example of Movado at a point when the brand was producing watches that could stand comfortably alongside its more celebrated peers, while still retaining a character that is distinctly its own.
