The term “Calatrava” is used here in the broad collector’s sense: a small, round, restrained dress watch built around proportion, clarity, and restraint, with roots tied to the Patek Philippe Ref. 96. The Reference 96 was launched in 1932, which helped define the modern Swiss dress watch as a simple, functional object rather than a decorative one. By 1939, when this Longines was made, that language had become part of the wider vocabulary of serious Swiss watchmaking. Longines was especially well placed in that moment. Founded in Saint-Imier in 1832, the firm had spent the late 19th and early 20th centuries building a reputation for precision, industrial discipline, and elegant, practical watches.

This example captures that period beautifully. The stainless steel case measures 31mm across, with a 36.6mm lug-to-lug profile and a slim 10mm thickness, dimensions that feel very much of the late 1930s. The round case is simple but not plain, with symmetrical lugs and a lightness that gives the watch much of its charm. It is not trying to be imposing. It is a watch built around balance, and that is exactly the point.

The original silver dial is the heart of the piece. Its layout is crisp with black painted elongated hour markers, Arabic numerals at 3, 9, and 12, and a subsidiary seconds register at 6. The blued steel pointed stick hands add just enough color and contrast without disturbing the quietness of the design. The dial shows noticeable speckling and patination, but it reads as age rather than damage, giving the watch the kind of surface and warmth that collectors tend to look for in an honest pre-war piece. It is small, elegant, and direct, a pre-war steel dress piece that says a great deal with very little fuss.
