1938 Vintage Steel Omega Calatrava - Fab. Suisse Black Gilt Dial

Long before the wristwatch had settled into the familiar forms we recognize today, manufacturers such as Omega were experimenting with how time could be displayed more clearly and more practically on the wrist. This steel Omega, dating to approximately 1934, captures that transitional moment particularly well. With its restrained Calatrava-style design, black gilt dial, and centrally mounted seconds hand, it is an unusually purposeful example of pre-war Swiss watchmaking.

The most immediately striking feature is the original black dial, whose gilt printing has developed a warm, softly aged character over more than ninety years. Silver-toned Arabic numerals provide contrast against the dark surface, while the outer minute track and elegant period hands preserve the legibility that defined watches of this era. Particularly noteworthy is the “Fab. Suisse” signature beneath Omega, an abbreviation for Fabrication Suisse. Such markings were used on watches intended for the French market, where imported Swiss watches were required to clearly identify their country of manufacture. It is a small detail, but one that gives this watch a surprisingly specific sense of place and history.

More significant still is the central seconds display. At a time when the overwhelming majority of wristwatches used a subsidiary seconds register at six o’clock, a sweep seconds hand mounted from the center remained comparatively unusual. These configurations were particularly valued by physicians, who could read elapsed seconds quickly and accurately when taking a patient’s pulse. Omega would become closely associated with this idea through its early “Medicus” watches, and period central-seconds models are today an evocative reminder of an era when the wristwatch was increasingly becoming a professional instrument as much as a piece of personal jewelry.

Inside is Omega’s manually wound calibre 23.7, a 15-jewel movement that has been fully serviced and is presented in excellent mechanical condition. The ritual of winding it each morning feels particularly appropriate here, reinforcing the wonderfully direct relationship between wearer and machine that defines watches of this period.

More than anything, this Omega appeals for the completeness of its character. The black gilt dial, French-market “Fab. Suisse” signature, early center-seconds arrangement, and compact steel case each tell a different part of the story. Together, they create a watch that feels distinctly of the 1930s: elegant, utilitarian, and representative of a moment when the modern wristwatch was still being invented.
