1930's Vintage Solid Yellow Gold Tiffany & Co. Hooded-Lug Tonneau Case - Two-Tone Breguet Numeral Dial

The 1930s marked one of the most inventive periods in wristwatch design, as traditional round cases gave way to increasingly architectural forms shaped by the influence of Art Deco. Rectangular, tonneau and stepped cases appeared across the catalogues of the great Swiss makers, often produced in relatively small numbers and with a level of visual experimentation rarely seen in later decades.

This Tiffany & Co. is a particularly compelling expression of that period. The presence of center seconds is itself a particularly appealing detail on a watch of this era, giving the dial a more dynamic character than the subsidiary-seconds layouts more commonly associated with 1930s dress watches.

Inside is a manual-winding Movado calibre produced for Tiffany & Co., an interesting reminder of the retailer's long history of commissioning and selling Swiss watches under its own name.

Taken as a whole, this is the sort of early wristwatch that rewards a closer look. The unusual hooded-lug tonneau case, expressive two-tone dial, Breguet numerals, broad sword hands and red sweep seconds each bring their own character, yet together they form a remarkably coherent piece of 1930s design.
